Sakshi Malik: 1st Indian medalist in Rio Olympics





              She was also a known name in women wrestling but after the long waiting of 12 days in Rio 2016 when she won the first medal for the country in this Rio event, she made her a sensation for each Indian. Because after 12 days in Rio Olympic she is the only reason which made India proud.

      1. Sakshi Malik scripted history by becoming the first woman wrestler from India to bag an Olympic medal.


      2. Only fourth female athlete from the country to climb to the podium at the Olympics.


      3. Overall, Sakshi has won India’s fifth wrestling medal in the Olympic Games. It is India’s 25th medal in Olympic Games.


      4. Born on September 3, 1992, in Rohtak, Haryana, Sakshi Malik has her supportive parents, Sudesh and Sukhbir, to thank for encouraging her in her unusual career choice.


      5. She started wrestling at the age of 12 (Twelve) and won the medal after 12 (Twelve) years of hard work on the wrestling arena.


      6. She began training in wrestling at the age of 12 under a coach, Ishwar Dahiya, at Akhara in Chhotu Ram Stadium, Rohatak. Her coach and she had to face opposition from the locals for having taken up a sport "not for girls".



      7. She won many national wrestling titles.



      8. Malik's first success as a professional wrestler in the international arena came in 2010 at the Junior World Championships where she won the bronze medal in the 58 kg freestyle event.




      9. She also captured these major titles:

  • Bronze at Commonwealth Championship 2013 Johannesburg.
  • Silver at Commonwealth Games 2014 Glassgow.
  • Bronze at Asian Championship 2015 Doha.
  • Bronze at Olympic Games 2016 Rio De Janeiro.



    

        10. The win of 2016  is set to make the Rohtak girl richer as plenty of cash rewards are set to come her away. As things stand, an inflow of more than Rs 2.5 crore is on the cards. Here’s how:
              

  • Rupees 2 crore from the Government of Hariyana, in addition to a state land grant.
  • Rupees 50 lakh from the Indian Railways, as its employee.
  • Rupees 20 lakh from the Indian Olympic Association.
  • Rupees 15 lakh from JSW group.
  • Rupees 1.01 lakh from Salman Khan.
